Friends, readers and
co-workers - Thank you for all the support, and for all you create. Here's to a
tremendous 2013.
The last year was, well, an adventure. Aside from setting up a new home base I’m hoping to go even further into creator-owned and DIY.
I had a thought last week, when I played music we were a little nobody band and we lived, toured and played with other indie bands. We were never in direct competition with the mainstream and that was fine. But in comics, indies have to compete with the comic equivalent of Justin Bieber every week. So it dawned on me, why am I hanging out here? I shouldn’t. It’s my fault for having nostalgia for certain companies, but I just have to admit to myself these companies are essentially McDonalds now. I don’t like McDonalds or Bieber, yet I’m standing right next to them.
One of my main goals for 2013 is to become as self-sufficient as possible and to find new readers. I will be publishing through Bloody Pulp more, Black Mask is slowly ramping up and I think I will be using Kickstarter for some of my main creator-owned books.
Anyway, that’s it really. No more standing in McDonald’s bitching about the quality of the food.
There are millions of people out there who don’t know books like Saga and Fatale or even Frankenstein Alive, Alive even exist. We have to find a way to do this and I’m thinking it starts when we stop preaching to the choir.
I spoke to Bernie this morning. One way we are going to try and bring in new people is by doing less comic cons and more art fairs, book fairs and film festivals. We have tried the experiment and folks just are not finding our books so I think we need to go to them
That’s me rant.
I hope you all have a safe and happy new year!
